2 Christmas Hymns -ScP. Contributors: Walther. Recorder(s): SSATB instr/ vo. Score and Parts. Publisher's category: Christmas Music.
These two settings come from Johann Walther s ground-breaking Geistliches, first published in Wittenberg in 1524, and subsequently enlarged (the transcriptions here are based on the 1551 edition). Johann Walther (1496-1570) was one of the first composers to provide polyphonic settings of Lutheran hymns, and it would appear that his settings remaining in currency for several generations: both the pieces printed here appear, with a few alterations, in the fifth part of Michael Praetorius Musae Sioniae (1607). The Joseph, lieber Joseph mein melody was originally sung to the text "Resonet in laudibus": many settings survive in German sources, especially in the various south German keyboard tablatures (Sicher tablature etc.): in Catholic regions the Latin text was, of course, retained, as can be seen in the Luther s Advent hymn Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, based on the plainsong Veni redemptor gentium, was one of the most widely set Lutheran melodies: there are many settings in Praetorius Musae Sioniae, including a fine 6-part version in the present series (LPM 518), and a couple of 8-part versions. Samuel Scheldt s excellent 8-part setting is in our Early Music Library series (EML 304).
