In these pieces Franck has gone a long way from the origins of the pavan, introducing antiphonal groupings, and dramatic changes of mood. He probably had stringed instruments in mind as his first choice, but these pieces also work well on wind instruments (cornetts, sackbuts, curtals, recorders).
