These four three-part chansons by Jacques Arcadelt (c. 1505-1568) are remarkable for their simplicity: although recognizably French in their phrase structure, they seem to have some of the characteristics of the Italian villanella napolitana. The first three, printed after Le Roy and Ballard´s Tiers Livre de Chansons of 1553, are also unusual in having several verses. No. 4, printed after the same publishers Chansons a troys parties de M.
