The Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 was originally written for horn and piano and entitled Romanze and Allegro in 1849. It was one of a group of four small character pieces. Clara Schumann premiered the work with the horn player Julius Schlitterlau, writing subsequently in her diary: 'The piece is splendid, fresh and passionate, just as I like it!'(-The Strad) Robert Schumann later rewrote this piece for cello and piano as it is presented here and retitled it Adagio and Allegro.
