Airs de Danse. Contributors: Monteclaire. Recorder Solos (S/T). Publisher's category: Recorder Solos.
Monteclair was a composer of cantatas, serenades, instrumental concerts, a ballet and a well recieved opera,in which he wrote for a five-part recorder ensemble. He also part-owned a music shop, was a well known teacher (who taught Couperins children) and published two books of Contre-Danses and six books of the Menuets danced at the Opera. He is best known today for his flute duets, and the Deuxieme Concert for flute and bass.
The three treatises that I have seen all have sections of Airs de Danse dance tunes which are published here for the first time in a modern edition. In the Petite Method Monteclair writes that: Rien nefait mieux sentir les differents mouvements etfait mieux concevoir mesures, que les airs de Danse Nothing improves the understanding of the different tempos (mouvements) and metres than [singing or playing] dance tunes. (The term mouvement has connotations of the character of a piece as well being simply its speed.
All of the Airs de Danse are printed here, to avoid having to choose between them. Several of them have been taken from Monteclairs works for stage. Most are extremely good and well worth playing in their own right. The chaconnes and passacailles have been given editorial bass lines to aid their study; please alter and improve them in any way possible. A few dances appear in more than one treatise. They are usually rewritten in some way but where they are the same they have been printed here in different keys. There is no obvious order to the dances so for this edition a few have been moved to help the page layout.
