Italian composer, singer, and violinist Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen was born in poverty in 1745. She was able to learn violin at an orphanage for girls, even taking lessons from composer Giuseppe Tartini. As talented a composer as performer, Maddelena is thought to have been the first woman to compose string quartets. This charming Allegro from String Quartet No. 2 has been transposed to accessible G major, while retaining the spirit and energy of the original work.
