Written in 1996 at the request of Bruce Leek, the eminent recording engineer, American Sketches is a concerto in five movements for saxophone quartet. Symbolic of the vast diversity to be found in the United States, the first four movements are inspired by a musical style of a particular ethnic origin, with each featuring a different member of the quartet. The last movement brings the ensemble together and recapitulates all the material previously heard. Movements: 1. Ragas (Alto Saxophone), 2. Impressions (Tenor Saxophone), 3. Sueħos (Soprano Saxophone), 4. Shamrocks (Baritone Saxophone), 5. Mosaics.
