2 Fugues: (IV: BWV849 + XXII: BWV867) -ScP. Contributors: Bach. Recorder Quintets (SAATB). Score and Parts. Publisher's category: Recorder Quintets.
These fugues arc taken from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, a series in 2 volumes of 24 preludes and fugues each, using every major and minor key. Bach finished the first part in 1722, the second in 1744.
The variety of the fugues is apparent in the number of parts (2,3,4 or 5), the mood of the themes (quiet, song-like, lively), the form (simple fugue, double and triple fugue) and in the elaboration of the theme (stretto, contrary motion, inversion, augmentation, diminution).
The 2 fugues presented here are taken from the first volume of the collection.Fuga IV, BWV 849, orig. c sharp-minor, a triple fugue. Each of the three themes has its own characteristics: Theme I is vocal; theme II has a kinetic, flowing movement and a vocal mood; theme III gives the rhythm.
FugaXXn.BWV 867, orig. b flat-minor. Its vocal theme is binary: after a downward interval and a breathing space, the second portion starts one ninth higher (line of fourths). The theme appears in two shapes, as Dux (fourth down) and as Comes (fifth down). It dominates the whole piece so there is no counterpoint. The whole fugue is permeated by the second portion of the theme, in original form and inversion. Its tempo is calm, 13 page score with parts.
