Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach in Thuringia in 1685. He was the greatest member of an illustrious family of musicians who practiced their art continuously in central Germany from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth century.
This cantata, composed ostensibly for the third Sunday after Trinity, was played on several other occasions during Bachs lifetime, and has on its title page the designation "Per ogni tempo" (For any occasion). The two parts of Cantata no. 21 are divided into eleven movements.
The current arrangement is of chorus no. 9, an elaborate choral fugue into which is inserted a chorale cantus firmus.
