Like the terms chorale and foxtrot, the expressions blues and spirituals are familiar to everyone and would actually need no explanation were it not for the fact that we are calling upon recorders - among all instruments - to concern themselves with a type of music with which they are normally considered to have nothing in common. We know the recorder as an early baroque instrument, which awoke from a period of complete oblivion, like the Sleeping Beauty from her spell, to become, within a short time, absolutely universal. Its rebirth has also meant a new life for the music which is so typical of it.
