Non Nobis Domine -sc. Contributors: Byrd. Recorder Trios (ATB/SAB). Score. Publisher's category: Recorder Trios.

"Non nobis, Domine, sed nomini tuo da gloriam." "Not unto us, 0 Lord, but to Thy name be glory given." On these words of devotion William Byrd (1539 - 1623), a Catholic who nevertheless enjoyed high favor with the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I, composed the cantus firmus that he used as a basis for sixteen canons in two, three and four pares. From the sixteen we have chosen four to arrange for three recorders.
The first version is the best known and a great favorite among round-singers. It has been left in the original key and simply notated in the proper range for recorders. In the second, the "expansion version," the tenor-player must switch to soprano to accommodate the distance between the parts. In the third and fourth versions the cantus is inverted, and both have been raised one whole tone from their original keys.
