As part of the season's theme at Bayer Kultur (outside of Cologne, Germany), Escaich was commissioned to write a piece on "Orpheus and the Harp," to be premiered by the harp master Isabelle Moretti. Cantus II is, to be sure, a demanding work for an accomplished harpist with wide-ranging dynamics and intricate rhythm changes.
