Tarquinio Merula was born in Cremona, very probably in 1594 or 1595 given the record of his confirmation date - April 3, 1607 - and died there on Dec. 10, 1665.

Canzona 9, "La Monteverde" (Monteverdi), begins with aCanzona 10, "La Orbina" (either a proper name or the name of a kind of bird) is a work in three parts with a somewhat longwinded middle seciton in 6/4 time, and aCanzona 11 - "La Piva" (signifying a dove, a whistle or a flute), is characterized by its little stereotyped embellish ments suggested by the title.
Canzona 12 - "La Loda" (perhaps best translated as "The Lark"), with its wit and lightheartedness, is close to the canzona "La Lusignuola".
