Louise Talma was born in Arcachon, France, on October 31, 1906. She was the first woman to receive two Guggenheim Awards, to be elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1974), and to receive the Sibelius Medal for composition from the Harriet Cohen International Music Awards in London (1963). She wrote most of her compositions at the MacDowell Colony. Louise Talma died at the Yaddo artists colony on August 13, 1996.
