Chacone from Ballet de Jeunesse. Contributors: Delalande. Recorder Quintets (SATTB/SAATB). Publisher's category: Recorder Quintets.

The Ballet de Jeunesse was written between 1683 and 1689. The chaconne was originally in A major, and led directly into a vocal chaconne, both of which would have been danced. It is likely to have been played by a mix of strings and woodwind, induding recorders. The original is in six parts, having an extra dessus, or top part, that doubled the first part for much of the piece, only having separate material in the trio sections. Here the part has been omitted and the trios are given to the soprano and alto recorders.
The score shows the C-bass part. The F-bass part is the same except that the low Ds at cadences are played an octave higher. (A separate part is induded.) In the same way there is an alternative 3rd part for alto.
The trio and tous markings show where the basses cut out. In large groups the trios can be played one-to-a-part or a-few-to-a-part for contrast. In large (larger?) groups each part can be doubled with a larger recorder an octave below. The trios can then be played by some, or all, of the smaller recorders. 12 page score and full parts with commentary.
