Jean-Baptiste Lully (originally Giovanni Battista di Lulli) was born in Florence on November 28, 1632. He was discovered in 1646 by Roger de Lorraine, the Chevalier de Guise, and taken to France, where he entered the service of King Louis XIV in 1652. He became a French subject in 1661. His death came as a result of perhaps the most famous musical injury in recorded history. On January 8, 1687, Lully had been conducting a performance of a Te Deum in honor of Louis XIV's recent recovery from illness, and while keeping time by beating a huge staff on the floor (this having been the practice before the development of the baton) he chanced accidentally to strike his foot. This resulted in an abcessed toe which became gangrenous. Lully, alas, refused to allow the amputation of his toe, and so he perished of the spreading gangrene on March 22.
