Thomas Simpson was one of several important English composers and string-players who worked in Germany during the first quarter of the seventeenth century, the most distinguished of whom was probably William Brade. Simpson published two other collections of stylised dances: a book of pavans and galliards appeared in 1610, and in 1621 he published his Taffel-Conson (complete edition in LPMTS1, and selections in TM34), a large anthology of dances of various types arranged for four instruments and continue (some selections from this collection will be included in the present series). The present selection includes pavanes, galliards, courantes, etc.
