Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed the Double Concerto in A minor for Violin and Cello, Op. 102 in 1887, marking his final work for orchestra. Written for cellist Robert Hausmann and estranged friend and violist Joseph Joachim, the concerto functioned as a gesture of reconciliation with the latter.
