In this double concerto the Violin and Viola represent both aspects of a Janus-faced being: monolithic chordal blocks (in the second movement culminating in C major!) versus delicate melodic lines spreading and branching out, the contrast between solidity and weightlessness. A poem by Paul Celan inspired the composer to use this imagery of opposites.
