The piano pieces in this volume are rooted in the romantic “salon” tradition prevalent in Mexico City's musical life in the early 20th Century. Echoes of Bach, Beethoven, Schumann and Debussy are tempered by an ear inspired by “Mestizo” sounds, music that Chavez heard as a child while growing up in the surroundings of Mexico City.
