The Short Christmas Mass for Children's Choir and orchestra was composed in 1996 by Slovak composer Norbert Bodnar (born in 1956 in Kosice), whose compositions are successfully performed at home and abroad, and are gaining response among the music public and professional critics.
The Short Christmas Mass contains not only sacramental texts, but also Slovak folk poetry verses set to music that are also translated into German. The Mass is made up of five basic sections - the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus - Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Thanks to a combination of orchestra, making great use of folk instruments (the fujara, a long wooden shepherd's pipe, the ozembouch (a percussion rod) and bagpipes) and a children's choir, the composer managed to create a work that is immensely attractive, full of optimism and joy thereby making it accessible to a broad spectrum of professional and amateur orchestras.
