In the closing decades of the 18th century, London played a leading role in the development of the piano. By 1800 the new instrument had replaced the harpsichord both in the home & on the concert platform & English composers were beginning to play a signi ficant part in writing pieces to cater for a public that increasingly regarded piano playing as an essential social grace. This anthology is drawn from some of the dozens of publications that were printed in London to meet this demand. It is hoped that, t hough some of these composers may be unfamiliar to the modern musical public, their pieces may once again fulfil their original purpose as entertaining teaching pieces.
