Franz Doppler, for a time, served as flutist and conductor of the Hungarian National Theater, composing an opera on the subject of a popular historical figure of liberty, Moric Benyovszky. Anton Pfeiffer (a.k.a. Antal Siposs), a one-time student of Liszt, arranged themes from the opera, skillfully rendering the original setting for flute and piano. While Doppler is a staple of the flute world, his operatic output is all but forgotten. Editor Ittzes also points out that this virtuosic arrangement was produced by an outstanding pianist, ensuring that both performers will be challenged.
