Five Chansons (ca. 1500) - 4 sc. Contributors: Ninot. Recorder Quartets (ATTB). Publisher's category: Recorder Quartets.

Ninot le Petit was a somewhat mysterious Franco-Netherlandish composer who like many of his compatriots worked in Italy. He will probably be remembered most for his contribution to the chanson rustique. There are similarities in Ninot s chansons with the contemporary Italian vilotte, which likewise use the idiom of popular music and verse: the melody, whether borrowed or newly-composed, is in the tenor, but all the parts are rewarding to sing, and often there are antiphonal exchanges between pairs of voices.

These pieces should ideally be done with a balanced consort of voices or of instruments such as recorders or viols. If any voice is to be predominate, it should be the tenor. BT
