Nikolai Karlovich Medtner was born in Moscow on Christmas Eve, 1879. His works are many, and all of them include the piano; among them are fourteen piano sonatas, three violin sonatas, three piano concerti, two works for two pianos, many shorter piano pieces, and 108 songs, including two substantial works for vocalise. Medtner died at his home in Golders Green, London, on November 13th, 1951, and is buried in Hendon Cemetery.
