Antonn DvorĦk (1841-1904) composed his cycle of songs entitled GIPSY SONGS, Op. 55, in 1880 four the outstanding German tenor Gustav Walter, who premiered them at his recital in Vienna on February 4, 1881. A setting of seven poems from Adolf Heyduk's collection of poems called GIPSY MELODIES, the works are among the most successful items in the concert repertory, particularly the 4th song, SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME. Song titles: 1. MĦ psen zas mi lĦskou zn / My song rings out with love again; 2. Aj! Kterak trojhranec muj / Hey, how my triangle; 3. A les je tich½ kolem kol / The woods are silent all around; 4. KdyĊ mne starĦ matka / Songs my mother taught me; 5. Struna naladena / Now the string is tuned, lad; 6. Ċ irokİ rukĦvy / Flowing sleeves and trousers; 7. Dejte klec jestrĦbu / Give the hawk a cage. This critical edition by Otakar Ċ ourek includes text in Czech, German, and English. Versions are available from the publisher for both high voice (original keys) and medium voice (transposed).
