George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was a German/British Baroque composer who was a leading composer of concerti grossi, operas and oratorios. Born in Germany, he lived most of his life in Great Britain and became a British citizen in 1727.
During the years of 1716-1718 Handel wrote anthems with instrumental preludes for the band of the duke James Chandos. Chrysander supposes that in the small orchestra of the duke there were no violas and that for the preludes Handel chose some of his originally independent instrumental sonatas for two violins and violoncello and completed the upper parts by a hautboy and the violoncello by a bassoon and a double-bass. - HM
