Georg Friedrich Händel (February 23, 1685 – April 14, 1759) was a German Baroque composer who was a leading composer of concerti grossi, operas and oratorios. He lived most of his life in Great Britain. His most famous piece is Messiah, an oratorio set to texts from the King James Bible; other well-known works are Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. He deeply influenced many of the composers who came after him, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and his style helped lead the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era.
Handel performed his first opera "Almira" on January 8, 1705, a few weeks before his twentieth birthday. The success of the performance surpassed all expectations and repeats took place until the end of February.
The score of Handels Almira contains nine two-part movements with no reference to the instruments intended. They include the earliest version of a sarabande which appeared later on as the arioso Lascia chio pianga (let me lament my lot with tears) and is still one of the best known of Handels tunes. The nine movements are assembled in the present volume.
