Handel to his Soul. Contributors: Walker. Recorder with other Instruments (s, S, H). Publisher's category: Recorder with other Instruments.
This cantata (a tribute to the late Percy Young) imagines an anxious Handel appealing to his Soul - his better self that he has lost - to appear to him and comfort him. The Soul appears to him, but is evasive, and rather than immediately succouring her distraught charge she decides to evoke the goddess Proserpina, she who brings destruction, to warn the unhappy composer that he should pull himself together or risk her annihilating scorn. Proserpina appears to Handel, telling him straight that if his rage and hatred (and his self-pity) do not abate, not only will he never be united with his Soul but he will risk not continuing to live at all. She emphasises that it is a miracle to be alive, and that he should therefore, live for this glorious day. The composer penitently takes these words to heart, and in doing so opens up a dialogue with his Soul. She promises him a future of true delight in union with her. For soprano voice, recorder and harpsichord. 16pg score and parts with intro.
