Between 1933 and 1945, Josef Haubrich (a lawyer from Cologne, Germany) acquired and preserved many works of art deemed “degenerate” by the Nazis, and later donated his collection to the city of Cologne. In HAUBRICH SUITE, paintings from The Haubrich Collection by Scherer, Kirchner, Ernst, and Modersohn-Becker are translated into sound with sensitivity and verve by composer Lauren Bernofsky. Commissioned by the International Women’s Brass Conference, HAUBRICH SUITE is scored for a brass sextet consisting of a standard quintet with a second horn. A euphonium part is provided as an alternative to the second horn, and flugelhorn parts are provided as alternatives to both horn parts, accentuating the music’s jazzy elements.
