This chanson rustique by Willaert (c. 1490-1562) comes from Le Roy and Ballard s Mellange de Chanson of 1572, though it was first published in 1560. The text may appear a little mystifying, and we probably have to assume double meanings. Any chanson from this time in which a woman has a toothache starts from the premise that the only the right man with the right equipment can make her forget her pain. As in many chansons rustiques,/i>, there is a refrain, which is spoken by the woman - the verse, however, is spoken by the man. - BT
