Pavans, Galliards, Almains. Contributors: Holborne. Recorder Quintets (SATTB). Publisher's category: Recorder Quintets.
In 1599, Anthony Holborne (c. 1545 - 1602) published Pavans, Galliards, Almains, and other short Aeirs both grave, and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins, or other Musicall Winde Instruments through William Barley, the Asigne of Thomas Morley. This complete edition contains all of the 65 quintets published in 1599. These quintets work well for strings, winds, or broken consort. For recorder players a grouping of SATTB instruments will handle most of the pieces; many of the pieces have parts that will fit nicely on narrow range instruments such as the crumhorn, cornamuse, or gemshorn. Of interest to gamba players, the Quintus and Tenor parts are available separately in C Clef.
