This quartet, commissioned by the Flanders Quartet, includes SATB, SSTB, ATBB, TTBB and BBBB movements. The players are challenged to imitate the home-grown music of each continent: in the Africa movement, the players must use their hands, knees and feet as percussion; in the Asia movement, the recorders must sound like shakuhachis; in the South America movement, a Bolivian pan flute style is required; and in Oceania a digeridoo effect is called for; in the Europe movement, a baroque sonata is in the air; and jazz resonates through the North America movement.
