ln 1768 Mozart, then barely twelve years old, composed an opera for the Vienna Theater. It was based on the brilliant comedy La finto semplice by Carlo Goldoni (1707-1794) as revised by Marco Coltellini (1719-1777). The premiere was thwarted by intrigues, however, and the work was eventually performed in Salzburg on 1 May 1769, although no records of the performance exist.
At the request of the singers, Mozart set at least one of the arias twice (No. 5] and rewrote several aria endings. The second version of Aria No. 23 and the revision of Aria No. 25, both dating from 1769, are reproduced in our vocal score along with the original versions.
