Weber, Spohr and Keller were contemporaries, born at the beginning of the Romantic movement in Germany, of which Weber was to become one of the first leading figures. Folk-song was then being discovered, valued and published: and the guitar, with its recently acquired sixth string, was considered ideal to provide an unpretentious accompaniment to the folk-influenced songs of the new unsophisticated Romatic style.
