Op.12 was published in 1867 when the composer was 24. With the exception of some folksong arrangements, they are the easiest pieces Grieg ever wrote. There can be little doubt that they were a conscious attempt to provide attractive material for the beginner. Op.3 was published two years earlier, and its pieces are generally more difficult.
