This work was written to be used in a liturgical setting, and the first page includes a photocopy-permissible transcript of the responsorial antiphon along with the words of the Magnificat with cues for the response. The responsory is always doubled by th e choral voices when it comes in.
The vocal lines of this Magnificat capture the flavor of chant with their somewhat melismatic quality, but the harmonies, resplendant with added 2nds, 4ths, 6ths, 7ths and 9ths, are reminiscent of the tonal colors of Debussy. Though singing the harmonies with confidence might require a choir with skilled ears, the movement of the lines is very graceful and should counteract that difficulty, putting it within reach of many choirs.
