This cantata was written for a consort of early music instruments and Mezzo Soprano voice. The vocal range is not large, but it sometimes lies a little low for a Soprano, and it occasionally goes up a little high for many Contraltos.
Because most early music consorts are composed of a mixed variety of instruments, mostly recorders and viols, there is a certain amount of flexibility to the instrumentation needed for this cantata. It will be necessary to have at least two recorder players covering the top parts of most instrumental pieces, as well as at least two viol players covering the bottom parts of most pieces. The interior parts can be played on either lower recorders or on the upper viols.
