Dvorak's Mass in D major was commissioned for the ceremonial consecration of the castle chapel at Luzany, the seat of architect and benefactor Josef Hlavka. Despite this fact, the Mass is nevertheless intended for performance by provincial choirs. This joyful work, revealing Dvorak's intimate knowledge of rural Czech sacred music, is written for solo voices, mixed choir and organ. Our edition contains the original version and is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak. The preface was written by Jarmil Burghauser.
