Allegro (Divertimento No. 1) K 229 -ScP. Contributors: Mozart. Recorder Trios (ATB). Score and Parts. Publisher's category: Recorder Trios.
The considerable humor in this movement is based on many little surprises: sudden shifts of rhythm and volume as in measure 42; the unusual use of the last two measures of the exposition for the basis of the development section (measures 52-57), while a serene and completely new melody floats above; the unexpected reappearance of the lyrical second theme in the lower tones of the bass (measure 95); the sudden soft chord at the climax of a crescendo (measure 116); the explosively jolly shift to triplet rhythm only four measures from the end; and the carefree prodigality of melodies throughout this compact, perfectly formed sonata-allegro movement. - February 1981, Eugene Reichenthal
