A surprisingly small amount of sixteenth-century Italian dance music has survived in ensemble form. Apart front Giorgio Mainerio's II Primo Libra de Balli of 1578 (subsequently pirated by Phalese, who published it as part of his 1583 collection), Bendusi's Opera Nova de
Bendusi's collection differs from most other Italian dance music of this time in that the music contained in it does not seem to consist of arrangements of dance tunes that were obviously part of a popular repertoire. There are many tunes that survive in a sufficiently large number of strongly different settings to show that they were part of a living tradition, for instance La Gamba or Le Forze d'Hercole (both found in Gardane's Intabolatura Nova di Balli da sonare per arpichordi).
