In Padrevia, King Tancred immures his beautiful daughter, Gismonda, in a castle, ostensibly to protect her from the world. By chance, she meets Guiscardo, a young gardener at the castle. When Tancred discovers their secret love, Guiscardo is killed; Gismonda then takes poison. Tancred grieves the loss of his beloved child.
