Walter S. Hartley (1927-2016), whose works for saxophone and low brass significantly expanded the repertoire available for those instruments, wrote the QUARTET CONCERTO for SATB saxophones in 1992 for a commission by the Atlanta Saxophone Quartet for a premiere with the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra. In four movements, the soli players are treated as a composite unit pitted againt the orchestra, somewhat as in the Baroque concerto grosso. The harmonic style is freely tonal. A version with orchestra accompaniment is available from Edwin F. Kalmus, while versions with wind ensemble or piano accompaniment are available from LudwigMasters Music. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2): St (9-8-7-6-5 in set): 4 Soli Saxes (SATB) in set.
