Hodkinson blends his love of Stravinsky's own Three Pieces with his early beginnings in jazz and popular music to fashion Quilt, Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet. Although, as Hodkinson points out, "The work makes considerable demands on the dexterity, rhythmic acumen and stamina of the soloist," attention should be paid to the movement titles, Ballad, Blues, and Boogie, as guides to performance style. "Quilt should sound as if emerging from an experienced nightclub player. If the artistry of, for example, a Buddy DeFranco, Tony Scott or Barney Bigard is unknown to the performer, then perhaps some enjoyable listening is in order."
