The melodies of these Russian folksongs are so multiform in their arrangement, their rhythmics, and their harmonics depending upon the melodic features that it is worthwile to occupy oneself with them without the words. The quartet movements by Gerd Ochs are meant to facilitate this. Apart from the suggested recorders - also two tenor and two bass recorders or a quartet of three tenor and one bass recorder might have a good effect - other woodwind or stringed instruments or both may, of course, be used. Attention must, however, be paid so that the right proportion of the individual parts is always maintained.
