Sonata K380 (originally in E Major)
Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples, Italy in 1685, the same year in which Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel were also bom. He is remembered chiefly for his keyboard sonatas.
Scarlattis sonatas are distinctive and reveal his highly idiomatic writing for the keyboard. They are to the harpsichord what Chopins music is to the piano and Paganinis to the violin. They are all single movements written in binary form, yet no two pieces are exactly alike. The voice leading is not laid out according to strict contrapuntal principles, but is treated quite freely: individual voices entering and leaving the general texture in very unconventional ways. - James Kurtz
