School of Josquin: Cueurs Desolez (3 settings) -ScP. Contributors: (various). Recorder Quartets (ATTB/ STTB). Score and Parts. Publisher's category: Recorder Quartets.

Intense, passionate works. These three settings of Cueur desolez evidently come from the same period (the early sixteenth century), but all three have for us today problems of authorship. Setting 1 is found only in the so-called Album of Margaret of Austria (Brussels, Bibliotheque royale, MS 228), a beautifully written manuscript that is nevertheless remarkably uninformative about the composers of the pieces. No less than fifteen pieces in the collection have been safely ascribed from other sources to Pierre de la Rue (d.1518), and he may well be the most likely candidate for this piece as well, given his fondness for including plainsong-derived canti fermi otherwise secular pieces.
