The word “Agogo” means a gong or a bell and sometimes the Agogo Bell is referred to as the Brazilian cowbell. This instrument is believed by many to be the oldest Samba instrument in existence and was based on West African Yoruba single or double bells. These connected steel bells of two sizes produce one high and one low pitched sound when struck by a wooden beater.
