Louis Spohr was born in Braunschweig (in Lower Saxony, Germany) on April 5th, 1784). He toured as a violin soloist at a fairly early age, and was engaged as a chamber musician by Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Brunswick in 1802. In 1805, Spohr became concertmaster at the court of Gotha, a positio he held until 1812. It was there that he met the 18-year-old harpist Dorette Scheidler, daughter of one of the court singers, and fell so in love with her that he composed the present sonata so that he could court her while rehearsing it. He obtained permission from Dorette's mother to drive her to the premiere performance in a carriage, but was unable to bring himself to propose to her until the drive home, saying "Shall we thus play together for life?" They were wed on February 2nd, 1806, toured in Italy, England, and Paris as a violin/harp duo, and remained happily married until Dorette's death 29 years later. Spohr worked as conductor at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna (1813-1815), and as director of music at the court of Kassel, from 1822 until his death, on October 22nd, 1859.
