Johann Christoph Pepusch was born in 1667 in Berlin, and at the early age of 14 acceded there to a post at the Court. He gave up this post in 1698. going first to Holland, then (after 1700) to England. There he made a name for himself in no time, being greatly valued both as a composer and as a scholar of musical theory and history. After receiving his Doctorate of Music in 1713, he spent many years as musical director of the Lincolns Inn Fields Theatre. His best known dramatic work, "The Beggars Opera", was performed there with tremendous success, the work is a satirical play that parodies English high society, using high-flown opera texts sung to fa-The present Sonata in G major is the third of six sonatas for recorder and basso continue. The opus was printed in Amsterdam by the publisher Etienne Roger. As he was wont, Roger published also this work without giving the year. But it is likely that the sonatas were composed and published while Pepusch lived in Holland (around 1700).
